BOOK AWARDSGuardian First Book Award 2002http://books.guardian.co.uk/firstbook2003 The Guardian First Book Award began life 37 years ago as the Guardian Fiction Award, with prize money of 200 guineas but with the increase of other fiction prizes, the focus changed in 1999 to "recognise and reward new writing in fiction and non-fiction" and is still the only big literary award in which readers have their say — reading groups based at Borders bookshops across the UK pick the shortlist. The winner of the £10,000 prize was announced at a ceremony in London on 3rd December.
