Orange Prize for Fiction 2003
Established in 1995 to celebrate the excellence of women's writing and judged entirely by women, the Orange Prize for Fiction was founded by a group of individuals from all aspects of publishing to widen the opportunities for women writers who were frequently passed over by the major literary prizes. Since its inception, the Orange Prize for Fiction has had a major impact on the literary landscape.
The winner — receiving a prize worth £30,000 and a limited edition bronze figurine (known as the 'Bessie') created by Grizel Niven, the elder sister of actor David Niven — was announced on 3rd June 2003 at an informal awards ceremony at Lincoln's Inn Fields in London.
